GINGER BEER THE WAY IT USED TO BE – WITH EXTRA LEMON!
Do you remember that ginger beer people used to brew at home? That’s the stuff we make. Every batch of Hakanoa ginger beer is fermented with our ‘bug’ or ‘plant’, and really does taste just like it used to.
Just before we bottle it, we add a dash of lemon juice. Except this time SOMEONE MADE A BIG OOPSIE AND PUT WAAAAY TOO MUCH IN!
It didn’t taste like our award-winning Dry Ginger Beer. That took us 10 years to perfect and the recipe CANNOT be messed with.
But it is very nice drink all the same, and we couldn’t bear the idea of chucking it out.
So we found ourselves in the possession of 14,000 bottles of Lemon Oopsie.
Honestly, if we were going to make a lemon drink, we would make a proper go of it – develop a recipe, trial it, be deliberate about it. This is something we had not planned for at all.
We were very strongly advised to tip it out. It wouldn’t have cost us anything. We felt very strongly that all the mahi that went into those bottles being wasted was just not going to happen on our watch.
So we asked the nice people at Kiwi Harvest if they would help us give it away to all the food banks around Aotearoa.
We have had to over-stick the labels (The original has got our Cuisine Artisan award sticker on it and you can’t display that if you change the recipe – plus it would just be too confusing for our little brand) , and we have had to truck 12 pallets of Lemon Oopsie to the Kiwi Harvest warehouses.
There are costs involved in doing that, so we sold a LIMITED EDITION of 50 cases to cover those costs.
